London Britpop Style is Back (or it should be).

11/13/2025

Somewhere between the intersection of Lily Allen’s new album, and seeing a Union Jack tote bag at Brandy Melville two days ago, it has dawned on me:

We are reaching a new era.

I love and embody French chic as much as the next girl, but sometimes I feel we are missing a bit of edge. I’ll always love a soft trench and a neat ballet flat — but lately, I’ve been craving something grittier. That is where this London, britpop, 90s Camden Market comes into play. And British designer Alexander McQueen is here to guide us through it.

In the early 1990s, the British youth was looking for rebellion. Bands like Blur, Oasis, Pulp, and The Clash were key players for the time. Britpop movement pulled in ideas from the punk movement, really just with better hair.

And just as the music scene was redefining itself, fashion was keeping pace. Designers like Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, and Stella McCartney began merging street grit with high fashion.

And if Paris has the Left Bank, Britpop had Camden.

Picture the Camden Market as a living, breathing wardrobe. The streets filled with vintage faded tees, leather jackets, boots. Everything looked like it had lived a few lives before yours. Unpolished yet confident, and it absolutely worked.

However, Britpop wasn’t just about music or clothes, it was more of an attitude. A way of living.

Magazines like The Face and i-D were photographing London kids like they were fashion icons mixed with rockstars. And it didn’t stop there. There were many notable style icons who fully embodied this movement. Kate Moss a.k.a the queen of London cool, Lily Allen, and of course Amy Winehouse.

Guiding us through it all, is Alexander McQueen, who sat at the crossroads of punk, Britpop, and couture. David Bowie famously wore McQueen’s Union Jack coat — transforming the flag from political emblem to fashion icon. (If you haven’t yet, go down the rabbit hole of his past collections and runways.)

All of this to say, this isn’t nostalgia we are experiencing. This is fashion cycling back, as it always does (don’t throw away your One Direction UK flag merch yet).

Now, to embody this new wave, it’s less about recreating the 90s, and more about carrying the London grit in a modern way. Let me share what to look for:

Thrifting will be your best friend. Your palette should look moody and lived in. Let your outfit textures clash: silk against leather, eyeliner a bit smudged, boots, tartan tights, an Alexander McQueen clutch in hand.

London in spirit, even if you are nowhere near the Thames.

You shouldn’t change your entire style just based on the trends, and the fashion trends are on a continuous loop. So find a few pieces you like, run with them, and then store them away till the trend cycle comes back (because it WILL come back).

Or wear them forever — because ultimately, your personal style is yours alone.

Let’s bring back the messy cool of London — the unapologetic energy of Britpop.

Because at the end of the day, trends come and go, but leather stays forever.
