“Je ne sais quoi”

Let’s talk je ne sais quoi

If you’re into fashion, this is not the first time you’ve heard this expression. If you’re new to fashion, you’ve still probably heard this thrown around in everyday life. But what is it? And can you master it?

By definition, “Je ne sais quoi” translates to "I don't know what" in English; but what it really means goes much deeper. It captures an indefinable charm and sort of effortless elegance. It is the art of throwing something on without much thought, yet it looks incredibly chic and well planned out — almost as if you spent hours on your appearance, when it may have only been a few minutes.

Let’s take my style muse Jane Birkin, who inspired the iconic Hermès Birkin bag. Known for her Parisian chic style, she often wore simple tees, denim, and knits layered in a way that felt both relaxed and timeless. Perhaps her most iconic moment? Using her Birkin bag, a bag that costs $10,000 minimum, as a catch-all for newspapers, groceries, and everything in between, stuffed to the brim without a second thought.

Je ne sais quoi is less about owning the Birkin, and more about how you live with it.

While it’s no secret that the French have mastered the art of effortlessness, Americans, as mentioned in Emily in Paris, are dying to learn the art. So is it possible?

Absolutely.

One must first own lots of simple yet elegant pieces and master tasteful layering without overthinking it, choose thoughtful details— vintage, timeless accessories — and develop your individual style. You must express your personality and the way you carry yourself through your look and not listen to so many trends that come and go.

Je ne sais quoi is a mindset as much as it is fashion. It’s the art of living beautifully without trying too hard. And maybe one day, you and I will wake up, throw on a white tee and jeans, and step out the door embodying the quiet confidence of effortlessness.
