“If it was up to me” it is.

As we continue to navigate early adulthood and transition into new phases of life, the feeling of not being satisfied will not be uncommon. Not satisfied with our jobs, our partners, where we live, our friends — anything can be applicable (can you tell I’ve been listening to Mel Robbins?)
In turn, we also typically do not make the necessary decisions and sacrifices to make real change. We don’t really work towards what we want, and fall into the excuses trap, me included. We’ll say: “if it was up to me, I would live here,” “if it was up to me, I would have this as my dream job,” “if it was up to me, I would date this kind of person.” And here is the scariest part, it is.
Every single decision you make lies in your own hands. Of course there may be logistical reasons to not to do something, but more often than not, we are too caught up in a limited belief of what we can achieve. We start to forget to make little conscious decisions to get us closer to our dreams everyday.
The bottom line and harshest truth: no one is coming to save you.
While it may be fun to fantasize about meeting a rich partner who will pay your way through life, or finding the perfection connection to land you your dream job, for the 99% majority, that will not happen. Chasing your dreams takes a mass amount of time and dedication, and I feel like most of us are too caught up in excuses to even start.
Let me be clear, I am not one of those meathead inspiration speakers who think discipline and working yourself to death is the key to life. Mental health, money, family ties, etc., are all valid reasons as to why you may be afraid to move to a new city for a job, or leave the friends that make you feel unfulfilled.
However, the first real step is figuring out exactly what you want, and how you’re going to get there. I may not be that motivational meathead, but I do want every single person reading this to reach their dreams and accomplish everything they have ever wanted. No more excuses.
If you truly want something, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to get it. If you see someone on social media living your dream life (even though social media is fake!) why should they be able to live that life and not you? What is stopping you? I believe with every bit of my soul that the universe is always working in your favor, and if you really want something, and it is meant for you, it will happen.
So start dreaming bigger and start working. Take little action every single day to help you get there. Want a job in a different field? Maybe send a message to someone with a job you want on LinkedIn, just to chat, no pressure. Want to move to a new city? Start doing fun research on it in your free time, or make it your phone background to keep it top of mind. It can be small, but it is helping you get closer to your dreams, I promise you.
Know what you want and why you want it, and watch it unfold in front of your eyes. No more “if it was up to me.” It entirely is, and you can accomplish everything that you want and more.
If you feel like you have no one to believe in you, I believe in you. Start dreaming bigger and start working.
